Suena a responsabilidad.

Y) “I can’t keep leading this response.”

Varias miradas se levantan inmediatamente.

Y tú continúas con absoluta sinceridad:

Y) “It’s unconstitutional.”

Silencio breve.

CJCS) “No, General.”

Y luego niega ligeramente con la cabeza.

CJCS) “Actually, quite the opposite.”

CJCS) “You, the CNGB and the Commandant of the Coast Guard…”

Señala la mesa.

CJCS) “…are the only people here who can lead this.”

La sala queda completamente quieta.

Porque no está exagerando.

Y el Chairman sigue explicándolo mientras varios civiles alrededor parecen procesarlo simultáneamente.

CJCS) “You command structures that sit across the civil-military boundary.”

Señala primero al Commandant.

CJCS) “Coast Guard.”

Luego al CNGB.

CJCS) “National Guard.”

Y finalmente hacia ti.

CJCS) “And USIC.”

CJCS) “You built your doctrine specifically to operate in continuity, interagency and CONUS overlap without breaking constitutional boundaries.”

Commandant) “He’s right. If this escalates domestically, the active-duty military becomes politically radioactive very fast.”

El CNGB añade inmediatamente:

CNGB) “Guard can support governors, but broad mobilization changes optics immediately.”

Y entonces el Chairman vuelve a mirarte directamente.

CJCS) “USIC is different.”

Tú frunces ligeramente el ceño.

Y él continúa:

CJCS) “You’re not maneuver infantry.”

Y) “Neither is the FBI.”

CJCS) “Exactly. That’s the point.”

USIC:

  • continuidad,
  • infraestructura,
  • coordinación federal,
  • protección nodal,
  • interoperabilidad civil.

No ocupación.

No patrullaje urbano masivo.

No imagen de guerra doméstica.

El POTUS finalmente habla otra vez.

POTUS) “Nacho.”

Tú levantas ligeramente la vista.

POTUS) “You’re not replacing civilian authority.”

Y luego, con claridad absoluta:

POTUS) “You’re preventing panic while civilian authority catches up.”

Eso sí te deja callado un segundo.

Porque la distinción importa muchísimo.

Y probablemente porque entiendes que, constitucionalmente…

tiene sentido.

El Director FBI incluso añade:

FBI) “Right now, you’re effectively functioning as continuity coordination. Not martial law.”

Y tú finalmente exhalas despacio una vez.

Procesando.

FEMADir) “Your orders, sir?”

DHS) “Instructions?”

Y) “We do not escalate. We react.”

Tu dedo golpea suavemente la mesa.

Y) “Where the hell are the other images?”

Porque eso sigue molestándote muchísimo.

No tener ojos.

No todavía.

Y entonces vuelves inmediatamente a lo importante.

Y) “Status on USIC Echo?”

Echo) “Echo Actual. No breach attempts yet, sir.”

Y) “Situation.”

Echo) “Five black Suburbans stopped at three hundred meters. Dismounted approximately twenty seconds ago. They’re forming a loose perimeter. Weapons visible. At least twelve long guns that I can identify.”

Pausa.

Echo) “I don’t think they know we’re federal infrastructure.”

Y) “Why do you say that?”

Echo) “Because they’re not treating us like a hardened target. No recon. No standoff. They’re just… standing there. Like they expected a warehouse.”

Y) “Continue.”

Echo) “Reassessing. I have movement. They’re advancing. Slow. Carrying what looks like a CAT-style team loadout. They definitely know how to hold rifles…”

Silencio corto.

Echo) “…and they have at least two AT4s.”

Echo) “…alongside something that looks like a…”

Echo) “…a dump truck.”

Silencio.

Echo) “A dump truck with welded steel plating. Full cab armor. Gun ports on both sides. And what looks like a bulldozer ram on the front.”

Echo) “Wait - they also mounted what appears to be a .50 cal on the roof. Improvised turret.”

Silencio absoluto en la sala.

Echo) “It’s a technical. A really, really angry technical.”

Echo) “I believe the correct term is… a juggernaut.”

Silencio.

Echo) “I swear I’m not joking.”

Incluso tú parpadeas una vez. Muy despacio.

Echo) “Approximately twenty hostiles total.”

El Director FBI ya parece físicamente agotado.

FBI) “…a juggernaut.”

Tú ignoras el comentario. Te centras en Echo.

Y) “Echo, how do you read their intent?”

Echo) “That’s the thing, sir. They’ve been stationary for almost ninety seconds. No attempt to breach. No attempt to establish overwatch. No apparent command structure visible from my position.”

Echo) “I don’t think they have a plan beyond ‘arrive and shoot.’”

Y) “Can you hold?”

La respuesta es inmediata.

Echo) “Yes, sir. The AT4s might crack exterior glass, but not beyond that. We’re locked down. All personnel in hard positions. Night shift didn’t leave - they’re at internal security stations. Twenty-eight personnel total, rifles, armor, and we know the building.”

Echo) “They don’t.”

Tú asientes aunque él no pueda verte.

Y) “Hold. Do not engage unless they breach.”

Echo) “Understood. Maintaining seal.”

Pero entonces el operador vuelve a hablar. Y su tono cambia completamente.

Echo) “Sir… this is weird.”

Echo) “I retract my earlier CAT assessment.”

Tú frunces ligeramente el ceño.

Echo) “These are not professionals.”

Echo) “They look like an airsoft team.”

Echo) “They know how to hold rifles…”

Y luego, completamente desconcertado:

Echo) “…but one of them is literally pointing an AT4 at another guy’s face. Like he’s showing it to him.”

Silencio absoluto.

Echo) “They’re arguing. I can see hand gestures. The leader - or the guy I thought was the leader - is yelling at someone.”

El operador hace una pausa breve. Procesando lo que ve.

Echo) “Sir, I think they’re having a tactical disagreement in front of the target.”

Echo) “Oh my God…”

Ruido al fondo. Gritos. Algo metálico cayendo.

Echo) “I… I don’t know how to describe this…”

Echo) “I swear I don’t know…”

Y entonces:

Echo) “He fired the AT4 into the other guy’s face.”

Silencio absoluto en la Situation Room.

Echo) “The one who was arguing with him. He just… turned and fired.”

Nadie respira.

Echo) “Backblast hit two more behind him…”

Más ruido al fondo.

Echo) “Multiple wounded and one Suburban just exploded.”

Echo) “They’re in full disarray. I see at least four down. Maybe five. The others are panicking.”

Echo) “Wait. They’re raising weapons.”

Silencio.

Echo) “They’re pointing at each other.”

Y entonces llega lo más surrealista todavía.

Echo) “They’re shooting each other.”

Echo) “With the AR-15s, I mean.”

Echo) “By the way, they didn’t modify them. Semi-automatic. What appears to be armor-piercing ammunition.”

Y finalmente:

Echo) “Three hostiles still standing. Two are running. One is on his knees with his hands on his head.”

El operador hace una pausa.

Echo) “I think they surrendered to a building.”

Y) “Echo, confirm your status.”

Echo) “Echo Actual. Zero casualties. Zero breaches. All personnel accounted for. Building secure.”

Echo) “We didn’t fire a single round, sir.”

Y) “Do not engage survivors. Perimeter only. You are not police. You are continuity personnel.”

Echo) “Understood.”

Y) “Secure the perimeter. Await law enforcement. And Echo…”

Y) “…good work.”

Echo) “Echo Actual copies. Standing by.”

FBI) “…this may be the dumbest terrorist attack in modern American history.”

El Commandant responde inmediatamente:

Commandant) “One of them discharged an AT4 into another human being at point blank range. That’s less ‘terror cell’ and more ‘Darwin event with political aspirations.’”

Y) “These are not the people who planned this.”

Silencio absoluto otra vez.

ATF) “We have attribution. Ninety percent confidence.”

Y) “Go to hell.”

Varias cabezas giran automáticamente.

Y tú continúas:

Y) “Is it them?”

El agente ATF responde inmediatamente.

ATF) “Almost certainly.”

Y) “Then what the hell are you telling me about confidence percentages for?”

El agente levanta ambas manos un poco. No en rendición. En puro reconocimiento. Tienes razón.

ATF) “It’s… domestic.”

ATF) “We’ve identified the group. They call themselves the ‘Constitutional Watchmen.’”

ATF) “Ex-Army. E-6. Separated 2018. Watchlist subject since early 2020.”

ATF) “Hates the military. Specifically hates the Army. They wouldn’t let him fly.”

Incluso el CSA parpadea una vez.

ATF) “Failed Army aviation selection. Twice. Medically disqualified from flight training after a panic disorder diagnosis during the second board.”

Y) “So he started a militia because he couldn’t be a pilot.”

ATF) “Apparently. And he never stopped obsessing over helicopters. We found manuals in his residence. Flight training videos. Pre-flight checklists. He was studying how to fly on his own.”

ATF) “He was convinced he could teach himself what the Army wouldn’t let him learn.”

Silencio breve.

Tú te inclinas ligeramente hacia delante.

Y) “Go on.”

El agente ATF navega a otro documento.

ATF) “The Watchmen have approximately thirty to forty active members across Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland. Tillerson is the leader. Self-appointed ‘Commander.’ No formal military chain of command. They train on private land. Weapons include AR-15s, some handguns, and -”

Mira la pantalla un instante.

ATF) “- we don’t know how they got the AT4s. They’re not in any stolen military inventory we’ve checked. They may have been acquired through a surplus chain or a private sale. We’re still tracing.”

Y) “Continue.”

ATF) “Tillerson’s ideology is fragmented. He hates the federal government, but specifically he hates technology. Digitization. ‘The machine.’ He believes the federal government uses continuity infrastructure to ‘control the population.’”

El agente hace una pausa breve.

ATF) “His words, not mine.”

Tú asientes. Una vez.

ATF) “He found the old continuity nodes through veteran bar conversations. Someone talked. Someone always talks. Tillerson connected dots that shouldn’t have been connectable.”

Silencio absoluto.

ATF) “He’s a lunatic. But he’s a lunatic with a working theory and a following.”

La sala queda quieta durante un momento.

ATF) “If I had to commit to a working hypothesis- he found the nodes accidentally. He didn’t know what he was hitting. He just knew ‘federal infrastructure’ existed and decided to attack it.”

Y) “And Echo?”

ATF) “Echo was on the same list. He didn’t distinguish between legacy and USIC. To him, any hardened federal installation with communications equipment was a target.”

Tú miras al agente ATF fijamente.

Y) “So he attacked continuity infrastructure without knowing what continuity infrastructure is.”

ATF) “That is my professional assessment, yes.”

ATF) “His idea of tactical intelligence was- steal a helicopter. A Bell or a Sikorsky, didn’t matter which. Rig it with explosives. Fly it into a target.”

El agente hace una pausa.

ATF) “He studied helicopter layouts for months. He knew start-up sequences. He knew airframe specifications. He knew exactly which bolts to remove to strip down weight.”

ATF) “What he didn’t know was how to actually fly one.”

ATF) “He’s not the kind of person any disgruntled intelligence officer would work with.”

Y luego:

ATF) “…because he hates intelligence people even more than he hates us.”

No alivio.

NSA) “We got outmaneuvered by a militia founder who can’t fly.”

Tú niegas lentamente con la cabeza.

Y) “No.”

Toda la sala vuelve a mirarte.

Y continúas con absoluta calma.

Y) “We got reminded that loose lips still sink ships.”

Silencio breve.

Porque ahí sí nadie puede discutir contigo.

Veteranos hablando demasiado. Infraestructura legacy olvidada.

Y) “How many people did we lose?”

Silencio breve.

Nadie quiere responder demasiado rápido.

Finalmente el continuity officer habla.

Officer) “Preliminary numbers only. Site One appears evacuated before structural collapse.”

Eso sí reduce ligeramente la tensión.

Officer) “Site Two…”

Mira la tablet.

Officer) “…possible four fatalities.”

La sala queda completamente quieta.

Y continúa:

Officer) “Site Three… communications incomplete, but local responders report at least seven casualties.”

Once.

Como mínimo.

Y probablemente subiendo.

Tú bajas apenas la mirada un segundo.

Procesándolo.

Porque aunque no fueran USIC…

siguen siendo continuidad.

Siguen siendo federales.

Y) “And why the hell do I already have first responders with dashcams…”

Señalas las pantallas.

Y) “…but we still don’t have ISR?”

CSAF) “Because domestic ISR authorization layers were built assuming we’d have time.”

Tú lo miras inmediatamente.

Y) “Well, we don’t.”

Silencio breve.

Y entonces añades algo todavía más duro:

Y) “If a county deputy with a dashboard camera reaches the site before federal ISR… then our architecture is wrong.”

NRO) “…I walked into criticism, didn’t I?”

Tú ni siquiera te giras todavía.

Y) “You walked into reality.”

Ahora parece algo distinto:

Y) “Your turn.”

No hace falta explicar demasiado más.

Ahora ya es claramente jurisdicción doméstica.

Investigación. Redes. Radicalización. Arrestos. Seguimiento.

El Director asiente una sola vez.

FBI) “Understood.”

Canal general USIC.

Miles de personas esperando instrucciones.

Tú transmites inmediatamente.

Y) “Attention all USIC personnel…”

La voz vuelve a recorrer:

  • nodos,
  • CPDs,
  • barracks,
  • instalaciones selladas,

Y) “Lift lockdown. Transition to READCON 4.”

Y) “Congratulations. You performed exceptionally well. Expect full post-mortem review within forty-eight hours.”

Jonathan Hale entra primero.

Jonathan E. Hale) “…I leave you alone for one Saturday.”

Y) “An anti-government lunatic who, according to Occam’s razor, found the old nodes through veteran bar conversations… and USIC Echo wasn’t attacked because the cell sent to hit it self-destructed before touching the node.”

Hale parpadea.

Sarah parpadea.

Jonathan E. Hale) “I’m sorry…”

S) “They what?”

Tú señalas al CSA con cansancio absoluto.

Y) “He explains it better.”

CSA) “Alright. Step by step.”

Señala la pantalla.

CSA) “Three legacy continuity sites were struck by domestic extremist elements. Not USIC. Legacy sites.”

Luego marca otra zona.

CSA) “Echo was apparently included in their target list, but they did not understand what it was.”

Sarah mira el mapa.

S) “Echo is hardened.”

CSA) “Extremely.”

Hale ya empieza a cerrar los ojos.

Jonathan E. Hale) “Please don’t tell me.”

CSA) “They approached with five Suburbans, rifles, two AT4s… and a dump truck.”

S) “…a what.”

CSA) “A dump truck. With welded steel plating, cab armor, gun ports, a bulldozer ram, and a .50 caliber mounted on the roof as an improvised turret.”

CSA) “Echo described it as a ‘really, really angry technical.’”

Sarah se queda mirando al CSA. Luego a ti. Luego a la pantalla.

S) “…a juggernaut.”

CSA) “Apparently that is the correct technical term, yes.”

CSA) “One of them mishandled an AT4 so badly that he fired into his own team at point blank range. Backblast injured others. One Suburban exploded. Survivors began shooting each other.”

Hale se queda completamente inmóvil.

Jonathan E. Hale) “This country is going to kill me.”

Sarah mira hacia ti.

S) “So Echo held.”

Y) “Echo didn’t need to fire.”

Eso deja un silencio rarísimo.

Porque es alivio.

Y horror.

Y puro absurdo histórico al mismo tiempo.

El CSA termina con voz seca:

CSA) “Preliminary assessment: domestic terrorism, catastrophic incompetence, and a very serious legacy continuity security failure.”

Jonathan E. Hale) “So… somehow the USIC system worked exactly as designed.”

Tú asientes una vez.

Y) “Yes. And the old one failed exactly where we were afraid it would.”

S) “Then we write the post-mortem before somebody tries to turn this into a political story.”

Hale asiente, seco.

Jonathan E. Hale) “Too late for ‘tries.’ But yes. We write it first.”

POTUS) “Well, gentlemen…”

Exhala despacio.

POTUS) “…sorry for ruining your Saturday.”

POTUS) “We have fifteen funerals to prepare… which, under the circumstances, feels far too low.”

Tú respondes inmediatamente.

Sin política.

Sin institucionalismo.

Solo verdad.

Y) “One is too many, Mr. President.”

El presidente asiente lentamente.

POTUS) “Completely agreed.”

POTUS) “But until we can shut all this down and integrate the assets under USIC…”

Y finalmente:

POTUS) “…I’d rather lose fifteen than fifteen hundred.”

  • USIC no hubiera existido,

CJCS) “The country just got a live demonstration of why continuity doctrine matters.”

El Director FEMA asiente lentamente.

FEMADir) “And why distributed continuity matters.”

El NSA Director añade con visible amargura:

NSA) “And why loose operational culture kills.”

Tú sigues mirando el mapa.

Porque honestamente no sientes ninguna victoria.

Solo alivio.

Y cansancio.

Jonathan E. Hale) “USIC wasn’t validated today because it fought.”

Y luego:

Jonathan E. Hale) “It was validated because it prevented everyone else from making this worse.”

Tú vuelves inmediatamente al modo operativo.

Porque la crisis ya no está creciendo.

Ahora toca cerrarla bien.

Y) “Release COGCON Delta.”

El continuity staff empieza inmediatamente a revertir posture.

Y) “Stand down National Guard readiness posture.”

El CNGB asiente.

CNGB) “Understood.”

Y) “We’ve got this. The only images likely to come out if the press isn’t contained…”

Señalas la pantalla.

Y) “…are Echo.”

Todos vuelven a mirar.

Cadáveres. Suburban ardiendo. Equipo táctico desperdigado. Cristales reventados. Un AT4 claramente disparado en dirección completamente absurda.

Y tú continúas todavía medio incrédulo.

Y) “Seventeen bodies on the street… one literally in pieces because somebody pointed an AT4 at him…”

Y) “…and the rest wearing tactical gear and shot full of holes by semi-auto AR-15s.”

Y) “And the other four Suburbans?”

Y) “What do we do with them? Do we requisition them into the federal pool?”

Miras otra vez la pantalla.

Y) “That’s standard procedure, right?”

GSA) “…technically yes, depending on evidentiary release.”

Tú asientes inmediatamente.

Y) “Good. We’re not sending four perfectly functional armored vehicles to scrap.”

Y entonces murmuras, genuinamente sorprendido:

Y) “These idiots have better equipment than some sheriff departments.”

Y) “Good Lord… people complain about federal pensions while these lunatics apparently spent retirement money building a low-budget PMC.”

Y) “By the way… more out of curiosity than operational concern…”

Miras hacia FBI y ATF.

Y) “…are we actually imprisoning that lunatic?”

FBI) “Probably not.”

Tú arqueas apenas una ceja.

ATF responde inmediatamente. Pero no como esperabas.

ATF) “Actually, sir… we don’t think Tillerson was at Echo.”

Tú arqueas una ceja.

ATF) “We found a stolen Bell 429 roughly half a mile from USIC Echo’s perimeter. Ditched in treeline. No structure damage. No friendly casualties. A single fatality inside - Tillerson.”

Silencio.

Tú no respondes inmediatamente.

Y) “Echo, confirm.”

La respuesta llega instantánea.

Echo) “Echo Actual. Confirming. Bandit, single rotary-wing, bearing two-seven-zero, approximately four minutes out. We issued standard challenge on GUARD frequency. No response.”

Echo) “We attempted verbal challenge on emergency channels. Twice. Negative response. Aircraft continued inbound trajectory at low altitude.”

Tú escuchas sin interrumpir.

Echo) “Per continuity defense protocol, we activated passive countermeasures. Laser dazzlers. Non-lethal. Designed to disrupt optical systems and pilot vision.”

Silencio breve.

Echo) “Helicopter became unstable approximately thirty seconds after laser engagement. Nose-down. No mayday. Impact in treeline at the perimeter boundary.”

Silencio absoluto en la sala.

Echo) “Bomb detonated on impact. No fragments reached the building. No casualties. Tillerson was identified by dental records.”

El operador hace una pausa.

Echo) “Echo Actual standing by.”

Y entonces, casi como una ocurrencia tardía:

Echo) “Sir - the lasers worked.”

Y) “Echo, confirm no casualties.”

Echo) “Zero. Building secure. Perimeter intact.”

Y) “Understood. Echo Actual, maintain posture.”

Cierras el canal.

Y entonces te giras lentamente hacia la mesa.

Y) “Well. That answers that.”

El Commandant rompe el silencio lentamente:

Commandant) “…he got shot down by a laser pointer.”

ATF) “That said, sir… Tillerson wasn’t the only militia leader in that region. He was just the one dumb enough to act first.”

Tú lo miras directamente.

ATF) “We’ve been tracking at least four other similar groups across the mid-Atlantic. Same ideology. Same recruiting pools. Same bar conversations. The only difference is they haven’t found a target yet.”

Silencio.

ATF) “The Watchmen were not an isolated cell. They were the leading edge of a much broader network of anti-government organizing. Tillerson just happened to find continuity infrastructure before anyone else did.”

Y) “So we have multiple militias within range of legacy continuity nodes who now know that a group of amateurs with AT4s caused a national crisis.”

ATF) “That is exactly what I’m saying, sir.”

ATF) “We recovered five hard drives from the Suburbans that didn’t explode. Tillerson kept records. Names. Meeting locations. Recruitment logs. He was building something bigger.”

El FBI Director interviene.

FBI) “We’re already cross-referencing against joint terrorism task force databases. Preliminary indication is that at least a dozen Watchmen members had contact with other militia groups in Pennsylvania and Ohio.”

Tú te quedas callado un momento.

Y) “So this isn’t over. It’s just the first wave that tripped on its own feet.”

El agente ATF no responde. No necesita hacerlo.

Tú asientes una vez.

Y) “Then we write the report. And we make sure the next group that tries this doesn’t trip.”

Miras al FBI Director.

Y) “I want a full threat assessment of every militia group within two hundred miles of any continuity node - legacy or USIC - on my desk within seventy-two hours.”

FBI) “Understood.”

Y luego añades, más bajo:

Y) “Good Lord… people complain about federal pensions while these lunatics apparently spent retirement money building a low-budget PMC.”

Y) “…and instead we got heavily armed idiots reenacting a Darwin award with federal implications.”

Hale deja escapar aire lentamente.

Jonathan E. Hale) “I genuinely don’t know whether to feel relieved or insulted on behalf of the United States Government.”

El NSA Director responde inmediatamente:

NSA) “Both.”

POTUS) “Well…”

Y luego, completamente agotado:

POTUS) “…at least history books are going to have a very confusing chapter.”

Y) “Well…”

Exhalas despacio.

Y) “…I’m going back to my wife. Our quiet museum-and-Mall morning got slightly ruined.”

Y tu tono cambia inmediatamente.

No agresivo.

Peor.

Profesional.

Muy profesional.

Y) “By the way, Director…”

Y) “…next time somebody approaches a protected person with three Suburbans and his hand inside his jacket… it would be a fantastic idea to warn said armed escort beforehand.”

El Director FBI literalmente se queda inmóvil.

Y tú continúas con absoluta calma.

Y) “We drew.”

Silencio absoluto.

Nadie respira.

Y) “I drew. Hart drew. Simmons, Park, the entire detail.”

Y) “I had my SIG in my hand, Director. DoD-issued. Pointed at the ground, but out. Outside the holster. Finger indexed.”

El Director cierra los ojos.

Y) “I was half a second from raising it. The only reason I didn’t was because your DSAC finally thought to open his jacket and show the badge.”

Y) “You do know we use the federal GUARD communications mesh, right?”

Demasiado tarde.

Tú continúas:

Y) “Even I carry a small earplug while I’m with my family. Precisely because I’m with my family.”

Sarah baja lentamente la mirada.

Porque ella sí entiende perfectamente las implicaciones.

Y tú rematas:

Y) “And that’s how I know there were no transmissions.”

No solo “cyber.”

También:

  • expert pistol,
  • expert rifle,
  • CQB,
  • SERE-C,
  • JSOC background.

Y) “Let me paint you a picture, Director.”

Y) “Six of my people. Armed. Trained. With my family ten meters behind them.”

Y) “Your DSAC walks toward me with his hand inside his jacket. No warning. No coordination. No code. Just - movement.”

Otra pausa. Más corta.

Y) “Statistically, the average gunfight at that distance lasts three seconds.”

Silencio absoluto.

Y) “I have expert pistol. Expert rifle. CQB. So does Hart. So does every single person on that detail.”

Haces una pausa.

Y) “We don’t miss.”

El Director abre la boca. No sale nada.

Y) “Your six agents would have been dead before they cleared leather. And maybe some of mine too. Because the DSAC had his finger on the trigger of a situation he didn’t understand.”

Y) “And here’s the part that keeps me up, Director -”

Le sostienes la mirada.

Y) “- we would have won.”

Silencio.

Y) “Because we weren’t fighting for the country. We weren’t fighting for protocol. We weren’t fighting for jurisdiction.”

Y) “We were fighting for my wife and my daughters.”

El Director finalmente cierra los ojos.

No dice nada.

No puede.

Y) “Your DSAC turned the National Mall into a potential shooting gallery with my family as collateral.”

Y) “And the only reason there isn’t a mass casualty federal incident in today’s report is that your man showed a badge before any of my people ran out of patience.”

FBI) “You’re not just ‘cyber.’ You’re expert pistol. Expert rifle. CQB. Your whole detail is.”

Pausa. Procesando en voz alta.

FBI) “Those quals aren’t decorative. I know exactly what that range qualification looks like. I know what it means when seven people with those credentials have their families behind them.”

Te mira directamente.

FBI) “My six agents wouldn’t have had time to return fire. They wouldn’t have known what hit them.”

Silencio.

FBI) “And I would have lost half a dozen federal agents on the National Mall on a Saturday morning… because my DSAC couldn’t be bothered to pick up a phone.”

El Commandant rompe el silencio lentamente:

Commandant) “Director… you wouldn’t have lost just six agents.”

El Director gira la cabeza hacia él.

Commandant) “You’d have lost six agents, and the country would have lost the commanding general of USIC. His Chief of Information. His continuity COCOM. All of it. Simultaneously.”

Commandant) “Because your man walked into a seven-on-six scenario with his hand inside his jacket and no identification.”

FBI) “Excuse me.”

Espera.

FBI) “Yes. This is the Director.”

FBI) “Effective immediately, DSAC Marcus is relieved of duty. Administrative suspension pending full investigation.”

FBI) “No. I don’t care what he says. He approached a protected principal with armed agents, no coordination, and no authorization code. His badge and weapon are to be surrendered within the hour.”

FBI) “Get it done.”

Cuelga.

Guarda el teléfono.

Mira hacia ti.

FBI) “He’s done.”

No dice nada. No hace falta.

Tú te quedas unos segundos callado.

Y) “He also didn’t have the DHS authorization code.”

El Director parpadea.

Y) “Hart asked. Three times. Your DSAC couldn’t produce it.”

Silencio.

Y) “Your Deputy Special Agent in Charge arrived at the National Mall with armed agents, no warning, no coordination code, hand inside his jacket, and expected me to just… get in the car.”

Y) “If I had been anyone else - anyone with less training, less restraint, less luck - your people would have been shot and my family would have watched.”

El Director no dice nada. No puede.

Finalmente tú simplemente asientes.

Y) “Well.”

Y luego, con una calma peligrosísima:

Y) “Then today he learned why procedures exist.”

Sección titulada «📅 Sábado, 17 de abril de 2021 | 🕘 12:30 | 📍 Situation Room - White House Complex»

La tensión finalmente empieza a romperse.

No desaparecer.

Pantallas clasificadas. Mapas tácticos. Café frío. Gente sobreviviendo a adrenalina residual.

Y entonces simplemente dices:

Y) “Good morning America…”

Y) “Another quiet spring morning in Washington DC…”

Y) “It’s 12:30 PM and we now leave you with two uninterrupted hours of music in celebration of successfully avoiding a national catastrophe…”

Y rematas:

Y) “…enjoy what are shaping up to be this summer’s biggest hits.”

Y luego varias personas simplemente empiezan a reírse.

No carcajadas descontroladas.

Risa agotada.

Humana.

POTUS) “Working with Gen Z is certainly an experience…”

Jonathan E. Hale) “Uh… Mr. President… this man is actually very calm.”

Jonathan E. Hale) “One day we’ll introduce you to actual DIA OSINT analysts…”

Y luego señala ligeramente hacia ti.

Jonathan E. Hale) “…and you’ll think General Pindado behaves like the Chairman.”

Ahora sí incluso el CJCS se ríe.

CJCS) “That terrifying, huh?”

Jonathan E. Hale) “Sir, with respect… they communicate almost entirely through caffeine poisoning, memes and emotional instability.”

Sarah asiente inmediatamente.

S) “Confirmed.”

El NSA Director incluso murmura:

NSA) “That explains several emails I’ve received at 03:00.”

A casa.

  • humo,
  • un suburban ardiendo,
  • imágenes lejanas de equipos tácticos,
  • comentaristas hablando demasiado pronto y entendiendo demasiado poco.

Em) “I know you won’t be able to tell me much…”

Mira la televisión un segundo.

Em) “…but was that it?”

Y asientes.

Y) “Yeah.”

Y luego, honestamente todavía medio incrédulo:

Y) “That was it.”

Te sientas junto a ella.

Y continúas:

Y) “But honestly…”

Exhalas despacio.

Y) “…believe me or not… we had absolutely nothing to do with that.”

Emily te mira unos segundos intentando procesarlo.

Y tú niegas ligeramente con la cabeza.

Y) “Our people saw it happen firsthand…”

Y) “…but we didn’t cause it.”

Y entonces bajas un poco la voz.

Y) “What the news won’t say…”

Miras un instante hacia Ava y Celeste.

Y) “…is that fifteen federal personnel died today because other people didn’t know how to keep their mouths shut.”

Em) “Your people?”

Y) “No. Not mine.”

Y entonces, casi sin darte cuenta, sonríes apenas.

Una sonrisa agotada.

Pero real.

Y) “Mine performed in front of the entire federal apparatus today…”

Miras a Emily directamente.

Y) “…and my God, Em… they were magnificent.”
