Katherine Walker) “Good morning. Would it be possible to speak with a doctor or a nurse, please?”
Nurse) “Of course, ma’am.”
Y pocos minutos después os acompañan a una consulta cómoda y luminosa.
Nada especialmente sofisticado.
Una mesa.
Tres sillas.
Doctor) “How can I help you?”
Kat mira hacia ti un instante.
Y luego decide ir directa al asunto.
Katherine Walker) “Well…”
Sonríe ligeramente.
Katherine Walker) “We have a question.”
Doctor) “Sure.”
Katherine Walker) “Yesterday Nacho and I had sex for the first time.”
La médica asiente sin inmutarse.
Katherine Walker) “Well, my first time.”
Kat sonríe.
Katherine Walker) “He already has two daughters.”
Katherine Walker) “And our goal is actually to have children.”
Doctor) “Okay.”
Katherine Walker) “What we don’t know is whether we can have sex again before knowing whether conception happened.”
Katherine Walker) “I mean…”
Katherine Walker) “Could it be dangerous for the baby if fertilization already occurred?”
Tú intervienes inmediatamente.
You) “Please forgive us. We’re just not entirely sure. Normally we’d ask my wife Emily, but she’s busy with her residency and we’d rather not bother her right now.”
Y entonces ocurre algo curioso.
Primero porque has dicho “my wife Emily” con absoluta naturalidad.
Doctor) “Actually, that’s a very common concern.”
Kat se relaja inmediatamente.
Katherine Walker) “Really?”
Doctor) “Very. And no.”
Ambos la observáis atentamente.
Doctor) “Having intercourse again would not harm a potential embryo.”
Kat parece aliviadísima.
Doctor) “If fertilization occurred, the embryo would still be microscopic at this stage. Normal intercourse would not interfere with implantation.”
Katherine Walker) “Oh.”
Doctor) “So from that perspective, there’s no reason to avoid intimacy.”
Doctor) “In fact, most couples trying to conceive are generally encouraged not to overcomplicate the process.”
You) “That sounds like advice Emily would give.”
Doctor) “Then your wife sounds like a good doctor.”
You) “She is.”
Doctor) “Honestly, the biggest challenge for many couples is stress. Not frequency.”
Katherine Walker) “That’s reassuring.”
Doctor) “Good.”
La médica cierra brevemente la carpeta electrónica.
Doctor) “Anything else I can help with?”
Kat mira hacia ti.

Katherine Walker) “Actually, one more question, doctor.”
Doctor) “Of course.”
Katherine Walker) “Can I ride horses?”
La capitana médica parpadea.
Katherine Walker) “And that’s not some strange metaphor.”
Ahora sí se ríe.
Katherine también.
Katherine Walker) “I mean actual horses.”
Doctor) “Good clarification.”
Katherine Walker) “Would that be dangerous?”
La médica niega suavemente con la cabeza.
Doctor) “At this stage, no.”
Doctor) “Assuming we’re talking about a potential conception that may or may not have occurred less than twenty-four hours ago, normal activities are perfectly fine.”
Katherine Walker) “Including riding?”
Doctor) “Including riding.”
Katherine Walker) “Good.”
Doctor) “Now, if a pregnancy is confirmed later, there may be activities we reassess depending on timing and circumstances.”
Katherine Walker) “That makes sense.”
Doctor) “But right now?”
Sonríe.
Doctor) “Live your life.”
Katherine parece encantada.
Katherine Walker) “Thank you.”
Doctor) “You’re welcome.”
La capitana cierra finalmente la carpeta electrónica.
Doctor) “Anything else?”
Kat te mira.
Tú la miras a ella.
Y ambos sabéis perfectamente que no.
Habéis venido con dos preguntas.
Y os vais con dos respuestas.
Katherine Walker) “No, doctor.”
Su sonrisa vuelve a aparecer.
Katherine Walker) “That’s exactly what we needed.”
La médica asiente.
Katherine Walker) “Thank you very much.”
Y entonces se gira hacia ti.
Katherine Walker) “Honey?”
Y sonríes.
You) “Let’s head upstairs.”
La reacción es inmediata.
Kat se ilumina como una bombilla.
Katherine Walker) “Okay.”

Katherine Walker) “Okay.”
You) “¿Okay?”
Katherine Walker) “I’ve been thinking about this all morning.”
Da un paso hacia ti. Luego otro.
Katherine Walker) “About what I want to do differently.”
Tú levantas una ceja.
You) “Differently?”
Katherine Walker) “Last night was…”
Busca la palabra. La encuentra.
Katherine Walker) “Perfect. You led. I followed. And it was exactly what I needed.”
Pone una mano sobre tu pecho. La deja ahí.
Katherine Walker) “But I’ve been thinking. All through the briefing. All through the consultation. All through the walk up here.”
Sonríe.
Katherine Walker) “And I don’t want to just follow today.”
Tú la miras. Esperas.
Katherine Walker) “I want to try things. I want to see what happens if I - if I do something and I don’t know if it’ll work. I want to make mistakes. I want to laugh when something’s funny. I want to find out what I like by doing it, not by being shown.”
Se muerde el labio. Pero no de duda. De anticipación.
Katherine Walker) “I want to participate, Nacho. Not just receive.”
You) “Then participate.”
Katherine Walker) “I’ve been thinking about this too.”
Katherine Walker) “Last night I let you undress me. Today…”
Tira del cinturón hasta liberarlo.
Katherine Walker) “I want to undress you.”
Katherine Walker) “Can I?”
You) “You don’t have to ask.”
Katherine Walker) “I know. I want to.”
Baja el elástico. Lentamente.
Katherine Walker) “Hi.”
Te ríes.
You) “Hi.”
Y entonces baja la cabeza.
Su boca encuentra tu pecho. Besa el esternón. Baja por el abdomen. Pero no va directa a ningún sitio. Toma desvíos. Besa la cadera. La ingle. El interior del muslo. Explora. Saborea.
Katherine Walker) “Found it.”
Katherine Walker) “I like that.”
You) “I could tell.”
Katherine Walker) “I mean - I like doing that. I like - “
Busca.
Katherine Walker) “Making you feel like that. I didn’t know it would feel like that. On my end.”
Pasa un dedo por tu labio inferior.
Katherine Walker) “That’s what I meant. About participating. About not just receiving.”
Katherine Walker) “My turn to lead.”
No es una pregunta. No es una propuesta. Es una declaración.
Rueda sobre ti. Se sienta a horcajadas sobre tu cintura. Su piel contra la tuya. Su peso sobre el tuyo. Te mira desde arriba.
Katherine Walker) “The doctor said we can do this as much as we want.”
Sonríe.
Katherine Walker) “I want to do it right.”
Se inclina y te besa. Lento. Profundo.
Katherine Walker) “But I want to do it my way.”
Te mira.
Katherine Walker) “I want to set the pace. I want to decide how deep. I want to feel what it’s like to be the one in control.”
Tú pones las manos en sus caderas. No para guiarla. Para sostenerla.
You) “Then take control.”
Respira hondo.
Te mira.
Katherine Walker) “Okay.”
Y entonces baja las caderas.
Despacio. Muy despacio. Centímetro a centímetro.
Katherine Walker) “…different.”
You) “Different how?”
Katherine Walker) “Different from last night.”
Abre los ojos.
Katherine Walker) “I can feel everything. More. Because I’m - “
Mueve las caderas. Apenas un centímetro. Prueba.
Katherine Walker) “Because I’m doing it.”
Empieza a moverse.
Katherine Walker) “This angle is - “
Se mueve ligeramente hacia delante. La respiración se le corta.
Katherine Walker) “Oh.”
You) “Yeah?”
Katherine Walker) “Yeah. That’s - that’s the spot from last night. But from this side it feels - “
Busca.
Katherine Walker) “Different. More intense.”
No se queda ahí. Experimenta.
Katherine Walker) “This is - “
Se ríe. Sin terminar la frase.
Katherine Walker) “This is fun.”
You) “Fun?”
Katherine Walker) “Yes. Fun. Like - “
Se mueve más rápido. Solo un poco.
Katherine Walker) “Like I’m playing. Like I’m discovering what my body can do. What your body does when I do something.”
Te mira.
Katherine Walker) “I didn’t know it could be fun. I thought it was supposed to be - “
Gime. Involuntariamente. Pero no se disculpa. No se detiene.
Katherine Walker) “Serious. Important. Beautiful. All of those things it is. But I didn’t know it could also be - fun. Playful. Like we’re both figuring it out and laughing when something’s awkward and - “
Ríe.
Katherine Walker) “Like this.”
Tú sonríes. Pones las manos en sus caderas. No para guiarla. Para sentirla.
You) “This is exactly what it’s supposed to be.”
Katherine Walker) “I want to try something.”
You) “Try it.”
Katherine Walker) “I don’t know if it’ll work.”
You) “Then we’ll find out.”
Luego vuelve a bajar.
Katherine Walker) “That.”
Repite el movimiento. Más intencionada ahora. Encuentra un ritmo. No el mismo de antes - uno nuevo. Más marcado. Más profundo.
Katherine Walker) “I like that.”
Katherine Walker) “I think - “
Se detiene. Respira hondo.
Katherine Walker) “I think I’m getting close.”
You) “Then keep going.”
Katherine Walker) “I don’t want to go too fast.”
You) “There’s no such thing. Not if it feels good.”
Ella asiente.
Temblando. Respirando.
Luego abre los ojos.
Te mira.
Katherine Walker) “…oh.”
Suelta una risa pequeña. De asombro.
Katherine Walker) “That’s different too.”
You) “Different how?”
Katherine Walker) “Last night it was - “
Busca.
Katherine Walker) “Beautiful. But I was receiving. Today - “
Katherine Walker) “Today I did it. I made it happen. I - “
Te mira.
Katherine Walker) “I understand now. Why people call it losing your innocence.”
Tú esperas.
Katherine Walker) “I thought it meant - losing something. Something being taken. But it’s not. It’s - “
Gira la cabeza. Busca las palabras exactas.
Katherine Walker) “It’s the moment you realize your body can do things you didn’t know it could do. That you can give pleasure as well as receive it. That there’s a whole world of sensation you’ve been walking past your entire life without knowing it was there.”
Sonríe.
Katherine Walker) “That’s not losing. That’s - “
You) “Finding.”
Ella asiente.
Katherine Walker) “Finding.”
Se inclina y te besa. Lento. Profundo.
Katherine Walker) “I found it. Today. Just now.”
Hay una pausa. Sus dedos juegan con tu pelo.
Katherine Walker) “I love you.”
You) “I love you too.”
Ella sonríe. Y se queda donde está. Sobre ti. Todavía conectada. Sin prisas por separarse.
Después de un rato, se mueve. No para bajar - para ajustar la posición. Para estar más cómoda.
Katherine Walker) “Can we stay like this a little longer?”
You) “As long as you want.”
Katherine Walker) “Good.”
Reflexiva.
Katherine Walker) “I’ve been thinking about how I did that.”
You) “How you did what?”
Katherine Walker) “How I led.”
Katherine Walker) “I was - “ Busca. “-determined. Focused. I knew what I wanted and I went for it.”
You) “You did.”
Katherine Walker) “That’s how I do everything. It’s how I’ve survived. You identify the objective, you plot the most efficient path, and you don’t let anything get in your way.”
Pasa un dedo distraídamente por tu esternón.
Katherine Walker) “And it worked. I got what I wanted.”
Katherine Walker) “But I also realized something.”
You) “What?”
Katherine Walker) “I was a little - “
Se detiene. Busca la palabra justa.
Katherine Walker) “Blunt.”
Katherine Walker) “I took what I wanted. I didn’t ask. I didn’t - “
Hace un gesto vago.
Katherine Walker) “I just did.”
You) “I noticed.”
Ella te mira, evaluando tu reacción.
Katherine Walker) “And you - you were fine with it?”
You) “I was more than fine.”
Ella sonríe. Pero la sonrisa es breve.
Katherine Walker) “But I think I can do it better.”
You) “Better how?”
Katherine Walker) “I liked leading. I liked it a lot. More than I thought I would.”
Una pausa.
Katherine Walker) “But I led like I lead everything else. Like I’m in a briefing. Like I’m negotiating. Like I need to assert myself to prove I belong there.”
Baja la voz.
Katherine Walker) “And with you - I don’t need to prove anything.”
Pone la mano abierta sobre tu corazón.
Katherine Walker) “I think I can be in control without being - blunt. I think I can tell you what I want without making it sound like an order.”
Sonríe.
Katherine Walker) “I think I can be sweet about it.”
You) “Sweet?”
Katherine Walker) “Sweet. Gentle. Warm. Whatever word works.”
Mira hacia un lado un momento.
Katherine Walker) “I’ve never been sweet with anyone. I don’t know if I know how.”
Vuelve a mirarte.
Katherine Walker) “But I want to learn. With you.”
Tú pasas la mano por su mejilla.
You) “Then learn.”
Katherine Walker) “It might not come out right the first time.”
You) “That’s okay. We have time.”
Katherine Walker) “I want to try again.”
You) “Now?”
Katherine Walker) “Not now now. In a minute. But - “
Levanta la cabeza.
Katherine Walker) “The other way. Like last night. But with me leading from below. And I want to do it - “
Busca.
Katherine Walker) “Softly. I want to tell you what I want, but I want to do it gently. I want to see if I can be in control and tender at the same time.”
Te mira.
Katherine Walker) “I think that’s the version of me I want to be with you.”
You) “Then be that version.”
Katherine Walker) “Even if I’m clumsy at first?”
You) “Especially then.”
Suavemente.
Katherine Walker) “Slow.”
Tú te detienes. Esperas.
Katherine Walker) “Slower than last night.”
Asientes.
Sube a tu mejilla.
Katherine Walker) “Like this.”
Su voz es baja. Tranquila. Pero firme.
Katherine Walker) “This pace.”
Katherine Walker) “A little slower.”
Obedeces.
Ella sonríe. No de triunfo. De conexión.
Katherine Walker) “Good.”
Katherine Walker) “And - “
Espera. Siente.
Katherine Walker) “Deeper.”
Katherine Walker) “I like that sound.”
Te mira.
Katherine Walker) “I like that I can make it happen without having to - “
Busca.
Katherine Walker) “Without having to push.”
Vuelve a sonreír.
Juntos.
Finalmente, ella susurra:
Katherine Walker) “…that.”
You) “That?”
Katherine Walker) “That was - “
Se ríe. Bajito.
Katherine Walker) “That was the version I wanted.”
Gira la cabeza para mirarte.
Katherine Walker) “Was it - ?”
You) “It was better.”
Ella parpadea.
Katherine Walker) “Better than the first time?”
You) “Different. But better.”
Katherine Walker) “Why?”
Tú la miras. Pausas.
You) “Because the first time, you were showing me what you can do. This time, you were showing me who you are.”
Ella no responde.
Katherine Walker) “I liked that version.”
You) “Me too.”
Katherine Walker) “I want to be that version. With you. Always.”
Tú le acaricias la mejilla.
You) “Then be that version.”
Ella asiente. Luego se ríe.
Katherine Walker) “Give me two minutes.”
Tú te ríes. Le acaricias la espalda.
You) “Take three.”

Katherine Walker) “And that’s enough for you?”
Levanta la vista.
Sus ojos buscan los tuyos.
Katherine Walker) “Am I enough for you?”
La pregunta no nace de la inseguridad.
No realmente.
You) “Kat.”
You) “I’m going to answer you. But first I need you to understand something.”
Ella espera.
You) “There are people who’ve been in relationships since they were fifteen. Who’ve had years of practice. Who know exactly what they like, what they don’t, how to ask for it, how to give it.”
Haces una pausa.
You) “And some of them are wonderful partners. But many of them learned the wrong things. They learned to protect themselves. To expect disappointment. To measure love by what they’ve been denied.”
Le tomas la mano.
You) “You didn’t learn any of that. You come into this without armor. Without resentment. Without the reflex to brace for the worst.”
Sonríes.
You) “You know what I realized?”
Kat espera.
You) “I didn’t change.”
No lo entiende del todo. Frunce ligeramente el ceño.
Katherine Walker) “What do you mean?”
You) “I mean - last night, before we did anything, you asked me if I was sure. And I said yes. And I meant it.”
Le tomas la mano.
You) “But I thought - maybe I was being careful. Maybe I was adapting. Maybe I was holding back parts of myself because you were new and I wanted to be gentle.”
Haces una pausa.
You) “But I wasn’t. I was just being me. The same me I’ve always been. The same me Emily fell in love with. The same me the girls call Dad.”
La miras.
You) “And then today - when you led that first time, when you were blunt and determined and focused - I didn’t mind. Because it was you. Being you.”
Sonríes.
You) “But then you tried the second way. The soft way. The sweet way. And I realized something.”
Katherine Walker) “What?”
You) “That’s not a different version of me. That’s not me adapting to you. That’s me. Exactly who I am. At my most natural.”
Bajas la voz.
You) “The slow pace. The checking in. The pauses. The tenderness. That’s not me being careful with you because you’re new. That’s me being happy. Because that’s what I like. That’s how I love.”
Kat te mira en silencio. Procesando.
You) “So when you ask me if you’re enough - the answer isn’t ‘yes’ like I’m making peace with something. The answer is that what we just did, the way we just did it, is my favorite way. Not the beginner version. Not the toned-down version. My favorite.”
Le acaricias la mejilla.
You) “And you gave me that without even knowing you were giving it. Because you were being yourself. The sweet version. The one you thought you didn’t know how to be.”
Kat parpadea. Una vez. Dos veces.
Katherine Walker) “So when you said ‘that was better’ - “
You) “I meant it. Not because the first time was bad. Because the second time was me. Completely. And you were you. Completely. And they matched.”
Se queda callada. Procesando. Reordenando lo que acaba de oír.
Katherine Walker) “I thought - “
Se detiene.
Katherine Walker) “I thought I had to learn to be what you wanted. That there was a version of me I needed to become. That the real me - the one who doesn’t know what she’s doing - wasn’t enough on its own.”
You) “Kat.”
Esperas a que te mire.
You) “The real you is the one I want. Not a future version. Not the one who’ll know everything in five years. This one. Right now. The one who leads bluntly and then figures out she’d rather lead sweetly. The one who asks questions. The one who pays attention.”
Ella sonríe. Es una sonrisa temblorosa, pero real.
Katherine Walker) “I didn’t know that.”
You) “Now you do.”
Asiente. Luego se ríe. Una risa pequeña, húmeda, liberada.
Katherine Walker) “So I already am what you want.”
You) “You already are.”
Katherine Walker) “I don’t need to become anything.”
You) “You just need to keep discovering what you already are.”
Se queda callada un momento. Dejando que las palabras se asienten.
Luego levanta la cabeza.
Katherine Walker) “But you have more experience. Obviously. You’ll have things you like. And things you don’t.”
Tú asientes.
You) “Sure. Everybody does.”
Kat espera.
You) “But I’m actually pretty traditional about all of this.”
Eso parece sorprenderla.
Katherine Walker) “You are?”
You) “Very. I like taking things slowly. I enjoy the kisses. The cuddling.”
You) “The affection. The feeling that we’re close to each other.”
Kat escucha atentamente.
You) “And Emily is very similar, actually.”
You) “So when you ask if you’re enough - you’re not just enough. You’re what we want. The way you love, the way you pay attention, the way you ask questions instead of assuming - that’s not you catching up. That’s you leading. In the ways that matter.”
Kat baja la mirada un instante.
Claramente emocionada.
You) “Kat.”
Ella vuelve a mirarte.
You) “The point isn’t to perform. The point is to build something together.”
Katherine Walker) “Together.”
You) “Together.”
Ella asiente despacio.
Katherine Walker) “And here I thought I was the one who needed to learn everything from scratch.”
You) “You will learn things. So will I. But the foundation - the part that actually matters - you already have it.”
Katherine Walker) “Which part?”
You) “The part that makes someone want to come home to you.”
Katherine Walker) “Okay.”
Te mira.
Katherine Walker) “I think I understand.”
You) “And if one day you become curious about something… Or you want to try something different… Or you discover you enjoy something particularly… Then you tell me.”
Katherine Walker) “Just like that?”
You) “Just like that.”
Katherine Walker) “And if it’s not your favorite thing in the world?”
Ahora eres tú quien sonríe.
You) “Then we’ll talk about it. Because relationships involve two people. By definition. Sometimes I’ll be more enthusiastic about something.”
You) “Sometimes you’ll be more enthusiastic about something. That’s normal.”
Katherine Walker) “And that’s okay?”
You) “Of course.”
You) “Because affection isn’t a negotiation. And love isn’t a scorecard.”
Katherine Walker) “How will I know?”
You) “Know what?”
Katherine Walker) “How will I know what I like? If I’ve never done most of it, how am I supposed to know what I enjoy?”
You) “The same way everybody finds out. You try things.”
Katherine Walker) “And if I try something and I don’t know if I like it?”
You) “Then we try it again another time. Or we don’t. It’s not a test, Kat.”
Ella asiente.
Katherine Walker) “And how will I know what you like? If I don’t know what I’m doing, how am I supposed to figure out what works for you?”
You) “You ask. You pay attention. You listen.”
Katherine Walker) “And if I’m not good at it?”
You) “Then you get better. Like everyone does. With practice. With communication. With time.”
Katherine Walker) “What if you want more than what you gave me last night? What if you held back because of me, and sooner or later you’re going to want something I don’t know how to give?”
Levanta la vista.
Katherine Walker) “What if what we like isn’t the same thing?”
You) “Kat.”
Esperas a que te mire bien.
You) “I didn’t hold back last night.”
Ella parpadea.
You) “I did exactly what I liked. At the pace I liked it. The way I liked it.”
Katherine Walker) “You did?”
You) “Yes. Every touch. Every pause. Every time I checked in with you. That wasn’t me restraining myself for your sake. That was me doing exactly what I wanted to do.”
You) “The way I made love to you last night? That wasn’t the beginner version. That wasn’t the toned-down version for your benefit. That was me. With you. At the exact speed that felt right for both of us.”
Le acaricias la mejilla.
You) “So if you also liked it, we’re already on the right track. Because we both liked the same thing. The same pace. The same night.”
Katherine Walker) “And if that changes?”
You) “Then we’ll talk about it. Like we’re talking about it now. And we’ll figure out the new thing together.”
Ella te observa largamente. Procesando.
Katherine Walker) “So I don’t need to know what I like yet.”
You) “No. You just need to be willing to find out.”
Katherine Walker) “And I don’t need to know what you like.”
You) “That’s my job to tell you. And I will.”
Katherine Walker) “And if what we like is different?”
You) “Then we’ll find the overlap. That’s what couples do. They don’t have to like everything the same way. They just have to like each other enough to make space for the differences.”
You) “At the end of the day… What matters is that we’re kind to each other. That we’re honest. That we’re happy.”
You) “And that we never stop talking.”
Katherine Walker) “You know…”
You) “Hmm?”
Katherine Walker) “I spent years thinking relationships looked complicated.”
You) “Some are.”
Katherine Walker) “Ours doesn’t feel complicated.”
Y sonríes.
You) “That’s because we’re cheating.”
Katherine Walker) “Cheating?”
You) “We actually tell each other what we’re thinking.”
Eso consigue arrancarle una carcajada.
Katherine Walker) “That does sound unfair.”
You) “Massively unfair.”
Katherine Walker) “Poor Washington.”
You) “Poor Washington.”

Katherine Walker) “So…”
Levanta la vista hacia ti.
Katherine Walker) “Normal people don’t talk?”
Tú te ríes.
You) “No idea. Apparently not. But the only other normal person I regularly talk to is Emily.”
Kat ya está sonriendo.
You) “And my friends.”
Katherine Walker) “Your friends are weird.”
You) “Kat.”
Katherine Walker) “What?”
You) “We share the same group of friends.”
Katherine Walker) “Exactly.”
You) “…”
Katherine Walker) “…”
You) “Fair.”
La besas suavemente.
Y eso sólo parece reforzar su argumento.
Katherine Walker) “Nacho.”
You) “Yes, honey?”
Katherine Walker) “Our friend group includes POTUS.”
You) “Technically true.”
Katherine Walker) “Who I call Dad.”
You) “Also true.”
Katherine Walker) “A United States Senator.”
You) “Margot.”
Katherine Walker) “Margot.”
Empieza a contar con los dedos.
Katherine Walker) “Two congressional candidates.”
You) “Noah and Paul.”
Katherine Walker) “A lieutenant colonel.”
You) “Mara.”
Katherine Walker) “Three captains.”
You) “Sarah, Sam and Alex.”
Katherine Walker) “A senior executive from DoD.”
You) “Hale.”
Katherine Walker) “The Director of Economic Policy for our senator.”
You) “Marie.”
Katherine Walker) “And Alice and Jamie.”
You) “Private sector.”
Katherine Walker) “Private sector.”
Hace una pausa.
Katherine Walker) “And they’re still Georgetown people.”
You) “That’s true.”
Katherine Walker) “This is not a normal group of friends.”
You) “Maybe.”
Katherine Walker) “Maybe?”
Katherine parece escandalizada.
Katherine Walker) “Honey. One of our friends has nuclear weapons.”
You) “That’s technically Dad’s job.”
Katherine Walker) “Exactly.”
You) “Fair point.”
Katherine Walker) “Another one commands parts of the United States military.”
You) “That’s me.”
Katherine Walker) “That’s you.”
You) “Still feels weird when you say it.”
Katherine Walker) “See?”
You) “Fair.”
Katherine Walker) “And somehow you’re all the same.”
You) “How so?”
Katherine Walker) “You all actually talk.”
Katherine Walker) “Margot talks. Marie talks. Dad talks. Mara definitely talks.”
You) “Oh, Mara absolutely talks.”
Katherine Walker) “Emily talks.”
You) “A lot.”
Katherine Walker) “You talk.”
You) “Apparently.”
Katherine Walker) “And when somebody has a problem, everyone else just…”
Hace un gesto con la mano.
Katherine Walker) “Shows up.”
Te quedas pensativo unos segundos.
Porque, visto desde fuera, sí es raro.
You) “Maybe that’s why we’re friends.”
Kat sonríe.
Katherine Walker) “Maybe.”
Permanecéis en silencio un instante.
Cómodos.
Tranquilos.
Hasta que Kat vuelve a hablar.
Katherine Walker) “You know what the strangest part is?”
You) “What?”
Katherine Walker) “Nobody in our group seems remotely impressed by anybody else’s title.”
Eso sí te hace reír.
Porque es completamente cierto.
POTUS discute con Mara sobre caballos.
Margot regala plumas porque sí.
Hale recibe burlas constantes.
Katherine Walker) “I think that’s why I like them.”
You) “Me too.”
Katherine Walker) “Good.”

Katherine Walker) “Okay…”
Levanta la cabeza para mirarte.
Katherine Walker) “Turns out it can be more than once.”
La sonrisa aparece sola.
Katherine Walker) “And more than five.”
Katherine Walker) “Six, actually.”
Katherine Walker) “I counted.”
Tú te ríes.
You) “I know you did.”
Katherine Walker) “Is that normal?”
You) “For some people. For others, once is plenty. There’s no right number.”
Katherine Walker) “But six seems like a lot.”
You) “It’s a lot of anything. But we had time. We had privacy. We had energy.” Sonríes. “And apparently, enthusiasm.”
Katherine Walker) “I like that number.”
You) “Six?”
Katherine Walker) “Six.”
Asiente.
Katherine Walker) “And you were right.”
Se acomoda de nuevo.
Katherine Walker) “It doesn’t hurt.”
Reflexiona un instante.
Katherine Walker) “Although…”
You) “Although?”
Katherine Walker) “It kind of… stings?”
Tú asientes.
You) “Give it ten minutes.”
Katherine Walker) “Really?”
You) “Probably less.”
Katherine Walker) “Why?”
You) “Because it’s a muscle, Kat.”
Ella parece procesarlo.
You) “Muscles get tired. They get sore. Especially when they’ve been working.”
Sonríes.
You) “And yours have been working quite a bit today.”
Katherine Walker) “So it’s not… I mean, it’s not because something’s wrong?”
You) “No. It’s because something was very, very right. Repeatedly. For two hours.”
Katherine Walker) “So I’m not-” Busca la palabra. “-fragile?”
Tú niegas. Con calma. Con certeza.
You) “Kat. You asked me to make love to you six times in a row. And you did. Every single time. Fully. Willingly. Enthusiastically.”
Le acaricias el brazo despacio.
You) “You’re not fragile. You’re sore because you worked muscles that didn’t know they existed until two days ago. That’s not weakness. That’s the receipt for a very successful afternoon.”
Ella se ríe.
Katherine Walker) “That’s a weird way to put it.”
You) “True, though.”
Katherine Walker) “True.”
Asiente seriamente.
Katherine Walker) “That actually makes perfect sense.”
Y entonces formula otra pregunta.
Katherine Walker) “And being hungry?”
No puedes evitar reírte.
You) “That’s also very normal.”
Katherine Walker) “It is?”
You) “Honey.”
Le acaricias suavemente el pelo.
You) “We’ve spent two hours moving around. Talking. Laughing. Not sitting still. And before that, we had a very long morning.”
Katherine Walker) “Fair.”
You) “Not necessarily intense. But duration matters.”
Katherine Walker) “So…”
You) “Think of it as a very long Pilates class.”
Katherine rompe a reír.
Katherine Walker) “That is the least romantic description imaginable.”
You) “And yet medically accurate.”
Katherine Walker) “Unfortunately.”
Pero se queda callada un momento. Y entonces añade, en voz más baja:
Katherine Walker) “Are you hungry too?”
You) “Starving.”
Ella levanta la cabeza.
Katherine Walker) “Really?”
Tú sonríes.
You) “Really. I’ve been doing the same thing you’ve been doing. My body’s been through the same workout.”
Katherine Walker) “I thought maybe it was just me. That I was being weak.”
You) “Kat.” Esperas a que te mire. “If I’m also hungry, and I’m also a little sore, and I’m also perfectly happy to lie here for another ten minutes before we figure out food-does that still sound weak to you?”
Ella lo piensa un segundo.
Katherine Walker) “…no.”
Sonríe.
You) “Because it’s not. It’s normal. It’s human. It’s what happens when two people spend a whole afternoon showing each other how they feel.”
Le das un beso en la frente.
You) “You’re not weird. You’re not fragile. You’re not the only one feeling this. And you definitely don’t need to apologize for any of it.”
Kat cierra los ojos un momento.
Completamente relajada ahora.
Katherine Walker) “Okay.”
Abre los ojos.
Katherine Walker) “Good.”
Katherine Walker) “Why am I learning so much today?”
You) “Because you listen.”
Katherine Walker) “No.”
Levanta la vista otra vez.
Con una sonrisa suave. Cariñosa.
Katherine Walker) “Because I love you.”
You) “I love you too.”
Katherine cierra los ojos un instante.
Completamente relajada.
Katherine Walker) “Good.”

Perfectamente feliz.
Y claramente hambrienta.
Lo cual tampoco resulta sorprendente.
Tú le acaricias distraídamente la espalda.
You) “Let’s order food.”
Katherine Walker) “Sounds good.”
You) “Pizza?”
Eso consigue que se ría inmediatamente.
Katherine Walker) “God.”
Levanta la cabeza.
Katherine Walker) “We sound like twenty-year-olds.”
You) “Kat…”
Katherine Walker) “Yes.”
Hace una pausa dramática.
Katherine Walker) “Right.”
You) “Exactly.”
Katherine Walker) “We are twenty-year-olds.”
You) “Twenty-three-year-olds.”
Katherine Walker) “Which is basically the same thing.”
You) “Fair.”
Permanecéis unos segundos más abrazados.
Hasta que se te ocurre una idea.
You) “Or…”
Katherine Walker) “Oh no.”
You) “We could go downstairs and make one.”
Kat gira la cabeza inmediatamente.
Katherine Walker) “You can make pizza too?”
You) “Kat.”
Katherine Walker) “What?”
You) “It’s a simple dough. Tomato sauce. Cheese. Whatever toppings you want.”
You) “Then you put it in an oven.”
Katherine Walker) “You skipped the terrifying part.”
You) “What terrifying part?”
Katherine Walker) “The dough.”
Y no puedes evitar reírte.
You) “The dough isn’t scary.”
Katherine Walker) “The dough is absolutely scary.”
You) “It’s flour, water, yeast and patience.”
Katherine Walker) “That’s exactly the sort of thing people say right before creating a biological weapon.”
You) “It’s bread, honey.”
Katherine Walker) “I’ve seen bakers.”
You) “Okay?”
Katherine Walker) “They talk about dough the way physicists talk about black holes.”
You) “You’re exaggerating.”
Katherine Walker) “Am I?”
You) “Yes.”
Katherine Walker) “Then explain sourdough.”
You) “No.”
Katherine Walker) “See?”
You) “That’s advanced wizardry.”
Katherine Walker) “Exactly.”
Katherine Walker) “Could we actually make one?”
You) “Of course.”
Katherine Walker) “Together?”
You) “That’s generally how together works.”
Katherine Walker) “Good.”
Sonríe.
Katherine Walker) “Then I vote for pizza.”
You) “Excellent.”
Katherine Walker) “And if the dough becomes sentient?”
You) “Then we’ll call Emily.”
Katherine Walker) “Why Emily?”
You) “Because she’s the smartest person I know.”
Katherine Walker) “And because you’ll make her deal with the consequences.”
You) “That too.”
Katherine vuelve a reír.
Y finalmente se incorpora un poco.
No con demasiada convicción.
Porque sigue estando perfectamente cómoda.
Katherine Walker) “Do we actually have to get up?”
You) “Eventually.”
Katherine Walker) “I object.”
You) “Duly noted.”
Katherine Walker) “Can the pizza wait five minutes?”
You) “Probably.”
Katherine Walker) “Perfect.”

You) “I need help with the dough.”
Aquello provoca varias sonrisas.
Porque no ocurre todos los días.
You) “I’ve never been particularly good at kneading.”
SPC) “I can help, sir.”
You) “You’re a lifesaver.”
SPC) “It’s dough, sir.”
You) “Exactly.”
Katherine Walker) “And if it sticks?”
SPC) “A little flour.”
Katherine Walker) “And if it keeps sticking?”
SPC) “More flour.”
Katherine Walker) “And if-”
SPC) “More flour, ma’am.”
Ingredientes preparados.
Y, quizá más importante, absoluta tranquilidad.
La gente entiende perfectamente cuándo alguien quiere cocinar y cuándo quiere estar solo.
Kat observa todo aquello.
La encimera.
La masa.
Los ingredientes.
Los hornos.
Y sonríe.
Katherine Walker) “This is amazing.”
You) “It’s pizza.”
Katherine Walker) “No.”
Niega con la cabeza.
Katherine Walker) “It’s us making pizza.”
Katherine Walker) “It’s shrinking.”
You) “That’s normal.”
Katherine Walker) “It’s fighting me.”
You) “That’s also normal.”
Katherine Walker) “I don’t like that those are both normal.”
Katherine Walker) “No.”
You) “What?”
Katherine Walker) “It’s wrong.”
You) “It’s pizza.”
Katherine Walker) “It’s geography.”
You) “Still edible.”
Katherine Walker) “That’s not the point.”
Finalmente os rendís ante la evidencia.
La pizza será deliciosa.
Y vagamente circular.
Katherine Walker) “You realize we’re making pizza in the White House.”
You) “Apparently.”
Katherine Walker) “After briefing the President.”
You) “Also apparently.”
Katherine Walker) “After redesigning federal budgeting.”
You) “Allegedly.”
Katherine Walker) “And after receiving reproductive medical guidance.”
Ahora eres tú quien rompe a reír.
You) “When you say it like that, it sounds weird.”
Katherine Walker) “Honey.”
Levanta una ceja.
Katherine Walker) “Our life is weird.”
You) “Fair.”
Katherine Walker) “Good weird.”

Kat inhala profundamente.
Katherine Walker) “That smells - “
Cierra los ojos un momento.
Katherine Walker) “Like a decision I’m very happy we made.”
Luego Kat te mira a ti.
Katherine Walker) “Come here.”
Katherine Walker) “There.”
Katherine Walker) “I like this.”
You) “This?”
Katherine Walker) “This.”
Suelta una risa pequeña. Casi de asombro.
Katherine Walker) “I mean - I liked the other thing too. Obviously. A lot.”
Katherine Walker) “But this is - different. This is - “
Busca. Y encuentra.
Katherine Walker) “This is just us. In a kitchen. Waiting for pizza. With flour on my jeans and tomato sauce on the counter.”
Se ríe.
Katherine Walker) “And I’m not thinking about whether this leads to something else. I’m not wondering what comes next. I’m just - here. Kissing you. Because I want to.”
Te mira.
Katherine Walker) “I didn’t know it could be like this.”
You) “Like what?”
Katherine Walker) “Enough. All by itself. Without needing to go anywhere.”
Katherine Walker) “Movies make it seem like you’re supposed to save the big kisses for big moments. Like a kiss is only meaningful if it leads somewhere.”
“ - just kissing. Because I want to. Because I can. Because the pizzas are in the oven and we have ten minutes and I looked at you and thought ‘I want to kiss him.’ And then I did it. And then I did it again.”
Sonríe.
Katherine Walker) “That’s not in the movies. The part where you just kiss someone because you feel like it. And it’s enough.”
You) “It is enough.”
Katherine Walker) “It’s more than enough.”
Te besa otra vez. Rápido. Triunfal.
Katherine Walker) “It’s better than the movies.”
You) “That’s a low bar.”
Ella se ríe.
Katherine Walker) “True.”
Katherine Walker) “And there’s no need to end up in bed every single time.”
You) “Exactly.”
Katherine Walker) “Really?”
You) “No need at all.”
Katherine Walker) “I think I like that.”
You) “That there’s no need?”
Katherine Walker) “That there’s no need.” Te mira. “Because if there’s no need, then when it happens it’s because we both wanted it. Not because it’s expected.”
Sonríe.
Katherine Walker) “And when it doesn’t happen - like now - we still get this.” Señala el beso que acaba de terminar. “Which is also really good.”
You) “It is.”
Katherine Walker) “I think I like this version of intimacy too.”
You) “This version?”
Katherine Walker) “The one that doesn’t have to go anywhere. The one that’s just - two people. In a kitchen. Kissing. Waiting for four pizzas to be done.”
Se ríe.
Katherine Walker) “I didn’t know that counted.”
You) “It counts.”
Ella asiente. Lentamente.
Katherine Walker) “Good.”
Katherine Walker) “Do you think people know that?”
You) “I think people like believing they already know how everything works.”
Katherine Walker) “That’s fair.”
You) “I usually go through life assuming somebody smarter than me is going to disagree with me.”
Katherine sonríe inmediatamente.
You) “And that I’ll probably learn something from it.”
Katherine Walker) “That’s actually a very good philosophy.”
Se inclina ligeramente hacia delante.
Katherine Walker) “And horrifically incompatible with this city.”
You) “Also true.”
Katherine Walker) “Which makes it even funnier that it works.”
La observas unos segundos. Kat sigue sonriendo. Completamente relajada.
Y entonces Kat recuerda algo.
Katherine Walker) “By the way.”
You) “Hmm?”
Katherine Walker) “You were right.”
You) “About?”
Katherine Walker) “The soreness.”
Hace un pequeño gesto con la mano.
Katherine Walker) “Gone.”
You) “Told you.”
Katherine Walker) “I know.”
La sonrisa se vuelve cálida. Cariñosa.
Katherine Walker) “I love it when you’re right.”
You) “That’s convenient.”
Katherine Walker) “Very.”
Katherine Walker) “Thank you, honey.”
You) “You’re welcome.”
Katherine Walker) “The pizza has interrupted a very important conversation.”
You) “I don’t know.”
Katherine Walker) “What?”
You) “The pizza seems pretty important too.”
Katherine intenta mantener una expresión seria.
Fracasa inmediatamente.

No perfecto.
No profesional.
Mark aparece primero.
Atraído por el aroma.
Y por la curiosidad.
POTUS) “Is that pizza?”
You) “Technically.”
POTUS) “That’s not a reassuring answer.”
Katherine Walker) “It’s good pizza.”
POTUS) “That’s exactly what somebody responsible for the pizza would say.”
Katherine Walker) “Mom!”
La abraza con entusiasmo.
Y eso ya te dice bastante.
Mark sonríe desde la mesa.
POTUS) “Nacho, meet my wife.”
La mujer se acerca.
FLOTUS) “Rebecca Walker.”
Te ofrece la mano.
Y sonríe con enorme calidez.
FLOTUS) “I’ve been hearing about you for months.”
You) “Hopefully good things.”
Rebecca se ríe.
FLOTUS) “Exclusively good things.”
Sonriendo constantemente.
Cogiendo tu mano sin darse cuenta.
Apoyándose en ti mientras habla.
Y siendo, sencillamente, feliz.
Finalmente Rebecca acaba negando con la cabeza.
FLOTUS) “I don’t think I’ve ever seen her this happy.”
Katherine Walker) “Mom.”
FLOTUS) “What?”
Katherine Walker) “You’re embarrassing me.”
FLOTUS) “Good.”
Mark se ríe.
POTUS) “She’s right, though.”
Y mira a su hija.
Con una sonrisa tranquila.
POTUS) “You seem happy.”
Katherine tarda exactamente medio segundo en responder.
Katherine Walker) “I am.”
FLOTUS) “And you.”
You) “Me?”
FLOTUS) “Mark hasn’t been this relaxed in years.”
El presidente suspira teatralmente.
POTUS) “Traitor.”
FLOTUS) “You know it’s true.”
POTUS) “Unfortunately.”
Rebecca sonríe.
FLOTUS) “He sleeps.”
Katherine Walker) “Mom.”
FLOTUS) “It’s relevant.”
POTUS) “Apparently.”
FLOTUS) “He laughs.”
POTUS) “Occasionally.”
FLOTUS) “And he stopped trying to personally solve every problem in America.”
POTUS) “That’s slander.”
You) “That’s definitely not true.”
Katherine Walker) “Not even slightly.”
Katherine Walker) “By the way.”
You) “Hmm?”
Katherine Walker) “I need to get you some White House hoodies.”
You) “Some what?”
Katherine Walker) “White House hoodies.”
You) “Why?”
Katherine Walker) “Because you don’t own any.”
You) “I don’t think that’s a real problem.”
Katherine Walker) “It absolutely is.”
Rebecca ya está sonriendo.
POTUS también.
Katherine Walker) “And a couple of t-shirts.”
You) “Honey.”
Katherine Walker) “What?”
You) “They’re kind of terrible.”
Katherine Walker) “Exactly.”
You) “…”
Katherine Walker) “They’re perfect pajamas.”
POTUS) “She’s got a point.”
FLOTUS) “She’s absolutely got a point.”
Katherine Walker) “Thank you.”
You) “I’m being outvoted.”
Katherine Walker) “Correct.”

FLOTUS) “Thank you for treating me like I’m intelligent, General.”
You) “Oh, come on.”
Rebecca sonríe.
You) “You don’t get to insist that I call you Rebecca and then call me General.”
Eso provoca una sonrisa inmediata en Mark.
You) “I’m Nacho, please.”
FLOTUS) “Fair.”
You) “And I don’t really understand the premise.”
Rebecca arquea una ceja.
You) “She is intelligent.”
La señalas suavemente.
You) “Obviously.”
FLOTUS) “Oh, I am.”
You) “Exactly.”
FLOTUS) “That’s not really the issue.”
FLOTUS) “The problem is that being First Lady isn’t designed for intelligence.”
Mark deja escapar un suspiro.
Porque ya ha oído aquello antes.
Muchas veces.
FLOTUS) “It’s designed for symbolism. Ceremonies. Photo opportunities. Causes that are expected to be harmless.”
FLOTUS) “Smiling in the right places.”
La sonrisa sigue ahí.
Pero ahora tiene algo de resignación.
FLOTUS) “I’m essentially decorative.”
Katherine hace una pequeña mueca.
Katherine Walker) “Mom…”
FLOTUS) “It’s true.”
Mark interviene inmediatamente.
POTUS) “It’s not.”
FLOTUS) “Mark.”
POTUS) “Rebecca.”
FLOTUS) “You have spent six years trying to get me substantive work.”
POTUS) “Because you’re good at it.”
FLOTUS) “I know.”
POTUS) “Then stop arguing my case for me.”
Eso provoca varias sonrisas.
Rebecca termina negando con la cabeza.
FLOTUS) “My point is that most people don’t. Most people see the title. The dresses. The events.”
FLOTUS) “The public appearances. And they assume that’s the whole person.”
You) “I think that’s true of a lot of positions.”
Rebecca te mira.
You) “People turn human beings into symbols. It’s easier.”
Mark asiente inmediatamente.
Katherine también.
You) “The problem is that symbols don’t have opinions. Or expertise. Or bad days. Or ideas worth listening to.”
Rebecca sonríe.
Una sonrisa más suave esta vez.
FLOTUS) “Exactly.”
You) “So no.”
Niega ligeramente con la cabeza.
You) “I don’t treat you like you’re intelligent.”
Rebecca parece confundida.
You) “I treat you like a person. The intelligence becomes obvious about thirty seconds later.”
La carcajada de Mark es inmediata.
POTUS) “Okay, that one was good.”
Katherine ya está sonriendo.
Rebecca tarda unos segundos más.
Pero termina riéndose también.
FLOTUS) “You’re very difficult to dislike, you know that?”
Katherine Walker) “I keep telling people.”
You) “Nobody listens.”
POTUS) “That’s because they’re hoping there’s a catch.”
You) “Is there?”
POTUS) “Not that we’ve found.”
Katherine Walker) “Trust me, I’ve looked.”
Katherine Walker) “By the way…”
Todos levantan la vista.
Katherine Walker) “This is not a conversation I expected to have with my parents.”
Mark ya empieza a sonreír.
Rebecca parece intrigada.
Katherine Walker) “Especially not one day after losing my virginity.”
POTUS) “Katie. My little girl. I need a moment.”
Katherine Walker) “Dad.”
POTUS) “No, no. I’m processing. The President of the United States is processing the fact that his daughter just-”
FLOTUS) “Mark.”
POTUS) “What? I’m allowed to be dramatic. I’m the father.”
Pero la sonrisa ya le está traicionando.
Porque todo esto es una representación.
Y Kat lo sabe perfectamente.
Katherine Walker) “Dad. I’m twenty-three.”
POTUS) “I’m aware.”
Katherine Walker) “I’ve been an adult for five years.”
POTUS) “Debatable.”
Katherine Walker) “And I’ve never given you a single scandal in six years.”
Katherine Walker) “No teenage pregnancy. No arrests. No drunk photos. No wild stories. No political disasters. Nothing.”
FLOTUS) “That’s… actually true.”
Katherine Walker) “The worst thing anyone has ever been able to say about me is that I liked going to bars. And even then I wasn’t getting drunk.”
Mark la observa. Ahora sin la actuación.
POTUS) “I know.”
Katherine Walker) “Six years, Dad. I started dealing with this city’s microscope when I was sixteen. And I’ve been perfect.”
Hace una pausa. Y luego sonríe.
Katherine Walker) “Yesterday at this time I was literally a virgin. Now I’m sitting here with the man I love, telling you we’re trying to build a family.”
Mira hacia ti.
Katherine Walker) “That’s not a scandal. That’s a very boring and very happy outcome.”
Mark se queda callado unos segundos.
Luego deja escapar un suspiro. Largo. Teatral. Pero los ojos le brillan.
POTUS) “You know what the worst part is?”
You) “What?”
POTUS) “She’s right.”
POTUS) “Six years. Not a single leak. Not a single story. Not a single moment where I had to defend her against anything that wasn’t invented.”
Rebecca asiente. Porque lo sabe mejor que nadie.
FLOTUS) “She’s been extraordinarily careful.”
POTUS) “And now she walks into the residence, drops the least scandalous scandal in White House history, and somehow makes me feel like I should be thanking her.”
Katherine Walker) “You’re welcome.”
POTUS) “That’s not what I-”
POTUS) “You know what’s annoying?”
You) “What?”
POTUS) “I was fully prepared to have a difficult conversation about all of this.”
Katherine Walker) “And?”
POTUS) “And you’ve made it impossible. Because everything you’re doing - everything you’ve done - is exactly what I would have asked for if I’d had the sense to design it.”
FLOTUS) “I think what your father is trying to say is that we’re happy for you.”
POTUS) “I was getting there.”
Katherine Walker) “Slowly.”
POTUS) “With dignity.”
POTUS) “Nacho.”
You) “Mr. President.”
POTUS) “I already trusted you before any of this. With my country. With my service. With things that matter.”
Asientes.
POTUS) “I’m not going to pretend I don’t have the occasional paternal twitch. But that’s my problem. Not yours.”
Sonríes.
You) “I understand.”
POTUS) “And for the record…”
Señala a su hija con la barbilla.
POTUS) “She’s been the most low-maintenance First Daughter in modern history. If she’s happy, I’m happy. And she’s clearly happy.”
Katherine Walker) “Told you.”
Katherine Walker) “He came around.”
You) “I noticed.”
Katherine Walker) “And also…”
Se gira hacia sus padres.
Katherine Walker) “This morning they let me wake the girls up.”
You) “We didn’t let you.”
Kat te mira.
You) “They’re our daughters. This isn’t temporary.”
You) “I know your heart may need a little longer than your head. But you’re not a guest artist.”
You) “You’re a resident artist.”
La observas.
You) “Exactly the same as Emily. Exactly the same as me.”
FLOTUS) “That was beautifully said.”
POTUS asiente lentamente.
Porque él también lo ha entendido. No era una promesa para el futuro. Era una descripción del presente.
Kat apoya la cabeza sobre tu hombro.
Katherine Walker) “See?”
FLOTUS) “See what?”
Katherine Walker) “This is why I keep him.”
Mark exhala.
POTUS) “That remains the most convincing argument I’ve heard all year.”

Naturalmente.
Katherine Walker) “Also…”
Mark cierra los ojos.
Porque reconoce inmediatamente ese tono.
Katherine Walker) “Talking to Nacho is easy.”
Rebecca sonríe.
Katherine Walker) “Very easy.”
POTUS) “You’ve made that point.”
Katherine Walker) “I’m making it again.”
Rebecca ya está riéndose.
Katherine Walker) “Did you know people apparently don’t talk?”
POTUS) “What?”
Katherine Walker) “Like… really talk. Even couples. Apparently. It makes no sense.”
Mark señala hacia vosotros dos.
POTUS) “Our teenage daughter is giving us a stereo commentary on her first relationship and everything that’s happened since yesterday.”
Katherine Walker) “Former teenage daughter.”
POTUS) “That doesn’t help.”
FLOTUS) “Well…”
Sonríe.
FLOTUS) “A lot of parents would kill for that.”
Mark la mira.
FLOTUS) “Not the details.”
POTUS) “Thank you.”
FLOTUS) “The honesty.”
Rebecca observa a Kat.
Luego a ti.
FLOTUS) “And she’s right.”
Katherine sonríe inmediatamente.
FLOTUS) “Most people don’t talk. Not really. Not about what matters. Not about what they’re afraid of.”
FLOTUS) “Not about what they want. And certainly not before problems start.”
Tú asientes.
Kat también.
FLOTUS) “Since that is very clearly not your problem…”
Una sonrisa cálida aparece en su rostro.
FLOTUS) “You two have a very good chance.”
Hace una pausa.
FLOTUS) “Not of doing well. Of doing exceptionally well.”
No has intentado cambiar de tema.
No has mostrado la menor incomodidad.
Simplemente has permanecido sentado, tranquilo, como si aquella conversación fuera perfectamente normal.
Luego mira a Rebecca.
Finalmente Mark suspira.
POTUS) “You know what I wasn’t prepared for?”
You) “What?”
POTUS) “How normal this feels.”
Katherine sonríe.
POTUS) “I kept waiting for the awkward part. And it never came.”
FLOTUS) “That’s because they’re treating it like normal life.”
POTUS) “It isn’t normal life.”
Katherine Walker) “It kind of is.”
You) “That’s actually the goal.”
Rebecca asiente inmediatamente.
FLOTUS) “Exactly.”
Y, sorprendentemente, parece estar funcionando.

Katherine Walker) “Oh, and by the way… we went to the White House medical unit this morning.”
Mark arquea una ceja.
POTUS) “Is everything okay?”
Katherine Walker) “Everything’s great.”
Katherine Walker) “We needed to know whether we could have sex again.”
POTUS) “Katie.”
Katherine Walker) “What? It was a legitimate medical question.”
Katherine Walker) “We didn’t know if we had to wait. Like… twenty days. Or a month. Or until the next election cycle.”
POTUS) “You’re enjoying this.”
Katherine Walker) “Immensely.”
Sin pausa ni pudor, continúa.
Katherine Walker) “The doctor was really nice. Very young. Army captain. She told us we didn’t have to wait at all.”
Katherine Walker) “So we didn’t.”
POTUS) “I don’t need the details.”
Katherine Walker) “I’m not giving you details, Dad. I’m giving you context.”
POTUS) “There’s a difference?”
Katherine Walker) “Yes. Context is informative. Details would be cruel.”
POTUS abre la boca para responder. La cierra. Vuelve a abrirla. Decide que no hay salida airosa.
POTUS) “…fair.”
Kat se gira hacia ti, triunfante. Luego vuelve a sus padres.
Katherine Walker) “Turns out it can happen more than once.”
Rebecca parpadea. Mark deja caer la cabeza hacia atrás.
POTUS) “Of course it can. I have three-”
Se detiene en seco.
FLOTUS) “Mark.”
POTUS) “I was going to say something else.”
FLOTUS) “No, you weren’t.”
POTUS) “I really wasn’t.”
Kat ya está riéndose a tu lado. Sin nada de vergüenza. Sin nada de contención. Simplemente feliz.
Katherine Walker) “Six times, actually.”
POTUS) “Six.”
Katherine Walker) “Six.”
POTUS) “Times.”
Katherine Walker) “In one morning… midmorning, something like that.”
POTUS) “I need a moment.”
FLOTUS) “You’ve been needing a moment for the last fifteen minutes.”
POTUS) “And I’ll need another one now.”
Katherine Walker) “And it’s very satisfying.”
Mira a sus padres.
Katherine Walker) “Like… really satisfying.”
A regañadientes.
POTUS) “Okay.”
Suspira.
POTUS) “Let me see if I understand correctly.”
POTUS) “You went to the White House doctor. Asked for medical clearance. Received it. Conducted extensive field research. And you’re now reporting that the results were… conclusive.”
Katherine Walker) “Conclusive. Satisfying. And promising for conception.”
POTUS) “Promising.”
Katherine Walker) “If we keep this up, the odds should be in our favor.”
FLOTUS) “Katie, you’re not supposed to make your father this uncomfortable at the dinner table.”
Katherine Walker) “I’m not making him uncomfortable. I’m being transparent.”
POTUS) “There’s a difference?”
Katherine Walker) “Apparently not to you.”
Tú intervienes, con calma.
You) “In our defense, the doctor said it was a very responsible question.”
POTUS) “Of course she did. She’s Army. She probably wrote it down as a best practice.”
Katherine Walker) “She did smile a lot.”
POTUS) “I’m sure she did.”
FLOTUS) “You know…”
Katherine Walker) “Hmm?”
FLOTUS) “The fact that your first instinct was to ask a doctor instead of the internet…”
Mira a Mark.
FLOTUS) “May be the healthiest thing I’ve heard all week.”

Katherine Walker) “By the way, Nacho?”
You) “Hm?”
Katherine Walker) “My period should be coming in the next few days.”
Tú asientes inmediatamente.
You) “Uh… that’s good.”
Kat arquea una ceja.
Katherine Walker) “Why?”
You) “Those are usually the most fertile days.”
You) “We’re probably going to have some very fun evenings.”
Katherine tarda exactamente medio segundo en procesarlo.
Katherine Walker) “Oh.”
Luego sonríe aún más.
Katherine Walker) “Nine months?”
You) “Maybe.”
You) “And if not, we’ll keep trying.”
La respuesta parece llenarla de felicidad.
No de ansiedad.
No de urgencia.
Simplemente de ilusión.
Katherine Walker) “Oh… great.”
POTUS) “I’m sitting right here.”
Katherine Walker) “I know.”
POTUS) “Just checking.”
Rebecca se ríe.
FLOTUS) “Mark, they’re adorable.”
POTUS) “They’re exhausting.”
Katherine Walker) “You love us.”
POTUS) “Unfortunately.”
Y esa expresión vuelve a aparecer.
Katherine Walker) “Should we go back upstairs?”
Y a Mark.
Y a Rebecca.
Y vuelves a mirarla.
You) “I think that’s an excellent idea.”
Katherine se ilumina inmediatamente.
Katherine Walker) “See?”
Se gira hacia sus padres.
Katherine Walker) “He understands me.”
POTUS) “That’s what worries me.”
FLOTUS) “I think that’s exactly the point.”
FLOTUS) “Katie?”
Katherine Walker) “Yes, Mom?”
FLOTUS) “I’m very happy for you.”
Profunda.
Katherine Walker) “I know.”
