Finalmente llegáis a casa.

Celeste tampoco.

Kat toma a Celeste con una sonrisa.

Katherine Walker) “I’ve got this one.”

You) “Deal.”

Sonriendo.

Katherine Walker) “Em.”

Emily Pindado) “What?”

You) “Did you just take pictures?”

Emily Pindado) “Maybe.”

Katherine Walker) “Emily.”

Emily Pindado) “Definitely.”

Katherine Walker) “You’re impossible.”

Emily Pindado) “You two were carrying sleeping babies upstairs.”

Emily Pindado) “I had no choice.”

You) “A terrible burden.”

Emily Pindado) “Exactly.”

Emily Pindado) “There she is.”

Katherine Walker) “What?”

Emily Pindado) “The horse girl.”

Katherine Walker) “Excuse me?”

Emily Pindado) “You spent the entire day behaving like a sophisticated lawyer.”

Katherine Walker) “I am a sophisticated lawyer.”

Emily Pindado) “And now you’re sitting on the floor.”

Katherine Walker) “It’s a very comfortable floor.”

You) “Strong argument.”

Katherine Walker) “Thank you.”

Emily niega con la cabeza.

Pero sigue sonriendo.

Durante unos minutos nadie dice nada.

Simplemente disfrutáis del silencio.

De la casa.

De saber que las niñas duermen arriba.

De saber que mañana no hay reuniones.

Ni briefings.

Ni comités.

Ni crisis.

Sólo sofá.

Manta.

Parque.

Y tiempo juntos.

Finalmente Kat habla.

Sin moverse.

Con los ojos cerrados.

Katherine Walker) “Today was a very good day.”

You) “It was.”

Emily Pindado) “Definitely.”

Katherine Walker) “One of the best.”

Katherine Walker) “Life is beautiful.”

Tú bajas la vista hacia ella.

Y la respuesta llega casi sin pensar.

You) “With the right people, yes.”

Kat abre los ojos.

Sólo un poco.

Lo suficiente para mirarte.

Y sonríe.

Porque entiende exactamente lo que quieres decir.

Emily también.

Emily Pindado) “That’s probably true.”

Durante unos segundos nadie añade nada más.

No hace falta.

Pensativa.

Katherine Walker) “You know…”

You) “Hmm?”

Katherine Walker) “When I was younger I thought happiness would feel bigger.”

Emily sonríe.

Katherine Walker) “Louder.”

Katherine Walker) “More dramatic.”

Katherine Walker) “More… obvious.”

You) “And?”

A vosotros.

Katherine Walker) “Turns out it’s mostly this.”

Emily asiente inmediatamente.

Emily Pindado) “Yeah.”

Katherine Walker) “A sofa.”

Emily Pindado) “A sofa.”

Katherine Walker) “People you love.”

You) “People you love.”

Katherine Walker) “Somewhere you belong.”

Emily Pindado) “And apparently an alarming quantity of waffles and pizza.”

Katherine rompe a reír.

Katherine Walker) “Essential components.”

You) “Fundamental pillars of civilization.”

Emily Pindado) “Medical science agrees.”

Katherine Walker) “Good.”

Katherine Walker) “I’m glad I came home.”

Emily Pindado) “Me too, honey.”

Katherine Walker) “Hey…”

You) “Hmm?”

Katherine Walker) “What are we doing about my house?”

Tú sigues la dirección de su dedo.

Y sonríes.

You) “That one?”

Katherine Walker) “That one.”

You) “The most practical thing would be joining them.”

Kat se incorpora un poco.

Interesada inmediatamente.

You) “Twelve bedrooms.”

You) “Two kitchens.”

You) “Eight bathrooms.”

You) “Four offices.”

You) “A six-car garage.”

Katherine Walker) “That sounds excessive.”

You) “We’re discussing six children.”

Katherine Walker) “Fair.”

You) “Plus guests.”

Emily Pindado) “Plus grandparents.”

Katherine Walker) “Good point.”

You) “Plus whichever friend inevitably ends up living with us for six months at some point.”

Emily rompe a reír.

Emily Pindado) “That’s almost guaranteed.”

Katherine Walker) “Probably Alex.”

You) “Or Sarah.”

Emily Pindado) “Or both.”

You) “The downside is that property taxes are going to become deeply offensive.”

Katherine Walker) “How offensive?”

You) “The sort of offensive that makes accountants pour themselves a drink.”

Emily ya está negando con la cabeza.

Emily Pindado) “He’s probably right.”

Katherine Walker) “Still worth it.”

You) “Absolutely.”

Miras otra vez por la ventana.

You) “And if we’re serious about raising six children…”

You) “The fence has to go.”

Kat asiente inmediatamente.

Sin la menor duda.

Katherine Walker) “The fence has to go.”

Emily Pindado) “Agreed.”

Katherine vuelve a acomodarse.

Pensativa.

Katherine Walker) “You know…”

You) “What?”

Katherine Walker) “When I bought that house…”

La sonrisa se vuelve algo más suave.

Katherine Walker) “I thought I was buying independence.”

Nadie dice nada.

Katherine Walker) “A place of my own.”

Katherine Walker) “Somewhere to come back to.”

Mira hacia la ventana.

Y luego hacia vosotros.

Katherine Walker) “Turns out I mostly bought an extension.”

Emily sonríe inmediatamente.

Emily Pindado) “That’s a very expensive extension.”

Katherine Walker) “A very expensive extension.”

You) “Potentially a very useful extension.”

Katherine Walker) “That too.”

Durante unos segundos vuelve el silencio.

Cómodo.

Hasta que Kat sonríe otra vez.

Katherine Walker) “Can we make a secret passage?”

Emily rompe a reír.

Emily Pindado) “Katie.”

Katherine Walker) “What?”

Emily Pindado) “You’re twenty-three.”

Katherine Walker) “Exactly.”

You) “Honestly?”

Las dos te miran.

You) “A secret passage would be objectively amazing.”

Katherine Walker) “See?”

Emily Pindado) “I married a child.”

You) “You married a computer scientist.”

Emily Pindado) “Same thing.”

Katherine Walker) “I support the tunnel proposal.”

You) “Motion seconded.”

Emily Pindado) “I hate both of you.”

Pensativa.

Y entonces se ríe sola.

Katherine Walker) “Right now that decision to ask engineering for a single SCIF seems like a very good idea.”

Y después rompe a reír.

Emily Pindado) “Oh my God.”

Katherine Walker) “Can you imagine?”

Se incorpora un poco.

Katherine Walker) “Having to dismantle one of them two months later?”

Y ya estás negando con la cabeza.

You) “That would’ve been painful.”

Katherine Walker) “Painful?”

You) “Honey, we’re talking about a SCIF.”

Emily Pindado) “He’s right.”

You) “You don’t just move one.”

Katherine Walker) “I know.”

You) “You practically perform a religious ceremony, sacrifice three budgets and fill out seven thousand forms.”

Emily asiente solemnemente.

Emily Pindado) “Roughly accurate.”

Katherine Walker) “And then Hale would’ve had an aneurysm.”

You) “Hale would’ve absolutely had an aneurysm.”

Emily Pindado) “And Sarah would’ve laughed at him.”

You) “For weeks.”

Katherine Walker) “And Mara would’ve asked why we didn’t think about it beforehand.”

Emily Pindado) “Which would’ve been a fair question.”

Kat se ríe.

Katherine Walker) “To be fair…”

Mira hacia la ventana.

Katherine Walker) “When we asked for the SCIF I wasn’t exactly planning on moving in.”

You) “You kind of were.”

Katherine Walker) “I was not.”

You) “You practically lived here already.”

Katherine Walker) “That is slander.”

Emily Pindado) “Honey.”

Katherine Walker) “What?”

Emily Pindado) “You had clothes in three closets.”

Katherine Walker) “Strategic positioning.”

You) “You had your own mug.”

Katherine Walker) “I like coffee.”

Emily Pindado) “You had a drawer in the nursery.”

Katherine Walker) “That one is harder to explain.”

Katherine termina sonriendo.

Katherine Walker) “Okay.”

Katherine Walker) “Maybe I was slightly moving in.”

You) “Slightly.”

Emily Pindado) “Extremely slightly.”

Katherine Walker) “Fine.”

Levanta las manos en señal de rendición.

Katherine Walker) “But now I definitely am.”

You) “That is true.”

Katherine Walker) “And now the single SCIF sounds genius.”

You) “It was genius.”

Emily Pindado) “Don’t encourage him.”

Katherine Walker) “No, no.”

Se gira hacia Emily.

Katherine Walker) “Let him have this one.”

Katherine Walker) “How many opportunities does a computer scientist get to say that family planning improved compartmented information security?”

Emily Pindado) “Okay.”

Emily Pindado) “That’s actually a very good point.”

Emily bosteza.

No discretamente.

No elegantemente.

Emily Pindado) “Alright, couple.”

Los señala alternativamente.

Emily Pindado) “I’m going to bed.”

You) “Reasonable.”

Katherine Walker) “Very.”

Emily se pone en pie.

Emily Pindado) “I have work tomorrow.”

You) “Unfortunately.”

Emily Pindado) “And you two…”

La sonrisa aparece inmediatamente.

Emily Pindado) “Enjoy the tickles.”

Katherine se tapa la cara.

Katherine Walker) “Em!”

Emily Pindado) “What?”

Katherine Walker) “You’re impossible.”

Emily Pindado) “I’ve been told.”

Se inclina y os da un beso a cada uno.

Primero a Kat.

Luego a ti.

Emily Pindado) “Goodnight, lovebirds.”

You) “Goodnight, honey.”

Katherine Walker) “Sleep well.”

Emily Pindado) “That’s the plan.”

You) “Should we go up too?”

Katherine sonríe.

Katherine Walker) “Probably.”

Katherine Walker) “She really is tired.”

You) “Residency.”

Katherine Walker) “Yeah.”

Ahora simplemente parece vuestra.

Kat se da cuenta también.

Porque observa el cuarto unos segundos.

Luego te observa a ti.

Y sonríe.

Katherine Walker) “You know…”

You) “Hmm?”

Katherine Walker) “Yesterday this felt like your room.”

Hace una pausa.

Katherine Walker) “Now it feels like ours.”

La frase es sencilla.

Pero te hace sonreír.

You) “Good.”

Katherine se acerca.

Y te rodea con los brazos.

Katherine Walker) “Good.”

Luego apoya la cabeza contra tu pecho.

Completamente relajada.

Sin ninguna prisa.

Sin ninguna preocupación.

Simplemente feliz.

Katherine Walker) “Morning, honey.”

You) “Morning.”

La voz todavía sale medio dormida.

Kat parece extraordinariamente satisfecha consigo misma.

You) “What?”

Katherine Walker) “Nothing.”

You) “Kat.”

Katherine Walker) “Okay, maybe something.”

Ahora ya estás riéndote.

You) “What is it?”

Ella se acerca un poco más.

Sin el menor disimulo.

Katherine Walker) “The tickles are gone.”

Y tardas aproximadamente un segundo en entender.

You) “Ah.”

Katherine Walker) “Yes.”

You) “A tragedy.”

Katherine Walker) “A terrible tragedy.”

You) “And?”

Katherine Walker) “And I’d like at least one more very good morning before we go get the girls.”

Niega con la cabeza.

Katherine Walker) “They’re going to wake up eventually.”

You) “That is generally how babies work.”

Katherine Walker) “Exactly.”

Y apoya la barbilla sobre tu pecho.

Perfectamente feliz.

Katherine Walker) “We should make the most of the statistical opportunity.”

La frase te hace reír inmediatamente.

You) “You’ve been spending too much time with me.”

Katherine Walker) “I know.”

You) “It’s spreading.”

Katherine Walker) “I know.”

Permanece unos segundos observándote.

Y luego sonríe otra vez.

Una sonrisa tranquila.

Cómoda.

Katherine Walker) “You know what I like?”

You) “What?”

Katherine Walker) “That none of this feels rushed.”

La habitación sigue en silencio.

La casa también.

Katherine Walker) “I spent years assuming relationships were supposed to be complicated.”

Katherine Walker) “Or stressful.”

Katherine Walker) “Or dramatic.”

Te da un beso suave.

Katherine Walker) “This is much better.”

You) “I agree.”

Katherine asiente.

Completamente convencida.

Katherine Walker) “Good.”

Luego vuelve a acurrucarse.

Katherine Walker) “This is a very good Saturday.”

You) “Promising start.”

Katherine Walker) “Very promising.”

Y, sinceramente, nadie parece dispuesto a discutirlo.

Katherine Walker) “Oh my God.”

You) “What?”

Katherine Walker) “Look at them.”

Katherine Walker) “Good morning, sweetheart.”

Ava responde con un ruido incomprensible.

Sin abrir los ojos.

Katherine se derrite inmediatamente.

Katherine Walker) “Nacho.”

You) “Hmm?”

Katherine Walker) “She made a noise.”

You) “That is generally how babies communicate.”

Katherine Walker) “It was adorable.”

You) “That is also generally true.”

Y, preferiblemente, brazos.

Katherine Walker) “Well.”

You) “Well.”

Katherine Walker) “I think the monsters are awake.”

Ava responde con un chillido feliz.

Celeste con otro.

Lo que confirma la hipótesis.

Kat toma a Ava.

Tú haces lo mismo con Celeste.

Y durante unos segundos os quedáis allí.

Sin ninguna prisa.

Las niñas todavía medio dormidas.

Apoyadas contra vosotros.

Seguras.

Tranquilas.

Katherine observa a Ava.

Luego te observa a ti.

Y sonríe.

Katherine Walker) “You know what?”

You) “What?”

Katherine Walker) “This part is still my favorite.”

Y miras a Celeste.

Luego a Ava.

Luego a Kat.

Y sonríes.

You) “Mine too.”

Katherine Walker) “They’re safe, right?”

You) “Honey.”

Katherine Walker) “What?”

You) “There are probably fewer lugares más seguros en todo Estados Unidos.”

Kat mira alrededor.

Katherine Walker) “Fair.”

Y entonces ve el arenero.

Y sonríe.

Esa sonrisa.

La de las ideas.

La de los problemas.

Katherine Walker) “Honey.”

You) “No.”

Katherine Walker) “You don’t even know what I’m going to say.”

You) “I absolutely do.”

Katherine Walker) “Castle?”

You) “Castle.”

Fascinadas.

O confundidas.

Resulta difícil distinguirlo.

Katherine Walker) “The tower is crooked.”

You) “It’s an artistic choice.”

Katherine Walker) “It’s structurally unsound.”

You) “It’s Maryland.”

Katherine Walker) “That doesn’t explain anything.”

You) “It explains enough.”

Katherine Walker) “How are we going to raise six children?”

You) “Poorly.”

Katherine Walker) “Nacho.”

You) “Lovingly.”

Katherine Walker) “Better.”

You) “And with a lot of castles.”

Katherine Walker) “A lot of castles.”

Katherine Walker) “They’re perfect.”

You) “They’re tiny gremlins.”

Katherine Walker) “Perfect tiny gremlins.”

You) “That I can agree with.”

Katherine Walker) “Well.”

You) “Well.”

Katherine Walker) “That could have gone better.”

You) “That’s what happens when legal counsel ignores engineering recommendations.”

Katherine Walker) “Excuse me?”

You) “The record will show I recommended buttresses.”

Katherine Walker) “The record is incorrect.”
